Re-Entering the Workforce After a Gap in Your Career
Seth Kaufman
Landing a job after
a significant period of unemployment can be a daunting task.
This has long been a concern for those who put their work on hold to raise
children. More recently, this has become a worry for growing numbers of
professionals whose jobs have been cut due to the economic recession.
For many there is a tendency for self doubt to crop up and inertia
to set in, when you have been out of work for a lengthy period of time.
The critics around you may further undermine your confidence by suggesting
that extended unemployment indicates a poor work ethic or lack of talent.
It is essential not to buy into this kind of thinking in order to maintain
your positive outlook.
A more productive way to think about a period of time away from the work
place is to turn it into a positive. For example, a gap in your
career might be reframed as affording you the time and space to develop
a fresh perspective on your industry or business. Or, you might cast yourself
as an agent of change in contrast to long term industry insiders married
to outmoded methods.
Re-inventing yourself comes easily once you tap into your creativity
and belief in what you have to offer. The key to your success
is being clear and compelling about how you can help your potential new
employer grow and thrive. Even during a recession, innovative
and forward thinking employers find value in those who think out of the
box and offer new ideas for growth.
Of course there are employers who will reflexively assume that a gap in
your career can only be a negative. My recommendation is don’t waste
your time and energy trying to overcome this kind of narrow thinking.
If you want to re-invent yourself, seek out opportunities where
the key players do not cling to rigid views regarding your achievement
potential.
Are you ready to re-enter the employment marketplace and claim
your career success? If your answer is yes, I welcome your inquiry about
how I can help you reach new levels of career growth and achievement.
